My wife and I were looking for a place to get away and have some quality alone time - without distractions - to reconnect and set the direction of the next year. We are currently living in northern Minnesota, and wanted to find somewhere relatively close, and were told about the Sunset Resort by a friend who had gone there in years past. It did not disappoint.

The facilities are friendly and welcoming, and the management - Tom - is more than accommodating. We took advantage of the special winter rates (3 nights for 2 adults for around $200 was a steal last year!) If you go on the weekend, be prepared for lots of snowmobile traffic. If sledding is you thing, look no further! They have premium sled gas right at the lodge, and many other parties were there for the wonderful riding on the Ash River itself. Not having a sled, we looked at rending one from one of the neighboring resorts, but seeing as we were on a budget - decided against it this time. Maybe next year!
We've stayed at Sunset Resort for the last 4 summers. They offer a relaxed, clean well-run resort. We always have a boat included in the rental and the boats are always well-maintained and safe. When there has been rain overnight and we are heading out to fish the next day, our boat has always been vacuumed out from excess water so we can enjoy ourselves right away. The cabins are absolutely spotless. John is very attentive to anything we might need, yet respects our privacy and desire to do our own thing. Sunset resort is very down to Earth, friendly and relaxing. We are treated as valued guests when staying there and always find our stay refreshing.
Stayed here this summer and can honestly tell you that this is one of the best resorts we've visited in Northern Minnesota! Not the most fanciest. So if you're looking for 5 stars, I might recommend you stay at the Hilton. This is perfect for a Minnesota getaway for sure. The staff was supper amazing - John and Kristi will literally go out of his way to help you out. The dock staff was always right there when we needed him, too. Only downside, The food trailer wasn't fully up and running with the grill, but just ice cream, which was still great to have. We'll be booking a week next year!
We are planning our return, and tell everyone we know about the excellent service. It's nothing extravagant, but for a nice, clean, quiet cabin out in the woods, it was exactly what the doctor ordered!
We camped at Sunset Resort and loved the location and the resort owners were really nice.
